The Perils of Success

Many people say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it also seems to be true that success is in the eye of the beholder. For some reason, the more success that one achieves, the more it ceases to hold its high value. What may mean the world to one person, could be a small thing to another.

We all seem to think that success is simply the absence of failure. Unfortunately, that causes us to forsake the little successes of life. Finding a lucky penny, the ability to receive an education, being born in free America, or just having the opportunity to live. These successes are rarely appreciated and yet they are the most important.

In addition we always say we crave success and frown upon failure. But what would success be without it? Would anything be worth anything at all? I’m not saying that we shouldn’t strive and fight for our dreams, we should. But instead of getting angry or upset every time things don’t go our way, we should instead thank the world for another opportunity to work hard and to try.

Do you think it would have meant anything that we went to the moon if it had been easy? Or would it have meant anything when Thomas Edison invented the light bulb unless he had tried and failed countless times before? Failure merely paves the way for success, so we should accept it with open arms. The next time you don’t achieve everything that you hope for, smile knowing that the next success you achieve will mean that much more. After all, nothing in life would be worthwhile if it were easy.
