What In The World Do Colleges Look For?

Every college is different and their admissions processes will never be understood unless you’re part of the select few that choose candidates.

However, in general, colleges look at the following material:

  1. GPA: Ah, the dreaded grade point average! But, don’t worry; it’s your weighted academic GPA. Well, maybe you do need to worry, but many colleges look at a specific GPA that starts from your sophomore year. And AP and honors classes are worth more credit! (There are some new regulations being enforced according to my friends, but I don't know the validity of those claims).
  2. SAT I & II. If you’re from the c/o 2012, or any class after that, you do not need to worry about the SAT II subject tests. But, if you are from c/o 2011 or earlier, be sure to take at least two of them. I suggest taking it after an AP class if you can. SAT I will test you on math and English. It’s one of the most important tests of your life. You should also take the PSAT as a preparatory step to the big SAT. An optional test is the ACT which is like the SAT, but it tests you on more than 2 subjects.
  3. Extracurricular activities. Colleges want to see a person that participates in the community and will make a lasting impact on the world. So start working on those leadership opportunities! This includes clubs, the ambassador program here at MyLife 24-7, and volunteering. On a side note, you NEED to volunteer!
